Although Facebook was born in the United States and its users communicated mostly in English, Facebook is now available in many countries and several languages. In this article you will know how Facebook started and its usefulness in today’s world.
History :
On February 2004, Harvard University student Mark Zuckerberg created the Facebook social network as a hobby. His objective was to post on internet information and photographs of students in that university so they could know each other.
Facebook was so successful that half a year later over 50% of students in Harvard University and other prestigious American education institutions were already registered. By 2005, Facebook already had over 1 million users and its headquarters were in Palo Alto, California.
At the end of that year, Facebook incorporated high school and foreign university students and had over 7 million users. In 2006, Facebook extended to India, Germany and Israel. On September 2006 Facebook became a social network open to all internet users.
Almost a year later, on October 2007, Facebook sold 1.6% of its shares to Microsoft for 240 million dollars. Its Spanish version appeared in 2008. In 2009 and 2010, Facebook had record numbers of users, 350 and 500 million respectively, as well as versions in over 70 languages.
Facebook’s success was such that it inspired the movie “The Social Network”, which was based on this social network’s creation and expansion. Now in 2011, Facebook has over 600 million users.
